Quintessesntial hairbrush

The thick handle and dully pointed teeth run smoothly through hair, leaving it shiny and soft. This hairbrush was modified from the simple/original hairbrush becoming the highly advanced and luxurious brush that it is today. The format of the brush has a large head that enables it to flow comfortably through hair, a thick handle to allow comfortable wielding power. The brush size is also portably convenient. Although it has a large head and handle, the brush is still portable. Making it available for use during the busy school day or at a fancy evening gala. The color of the brush is a jet black. Adorned with a simple gold designs. This makes the brush decorative, suave, and useful. Other brushes don't compare to the highly advanced design of this wonderful brush. Plain brushes tear up hair, are unfashionable, and just plain boring. Feeling the subtle scratch of the teeth of the brush, creates a feeling of total serenity and peace.

Lit. Circle Post

Ummm.. sooo! hello everyone! ummm....for the lit. circle posts I'm a lexicographer so I've posted my words on my sidebar! so you can take a look @ those words!THanks!
~kRiS

1 paragraph

Quote:"It's a very odd thing to recall, that we all looked up. NOt one of us looked at Ruth May. I can't say that Ruth May was even there with us, in that instant. Just for the moment it was as if she'd disappeared, and her voice was thrown into the trees. The she returned to us, but all that was left of her was an awful silence. The voiceless empty skin of my baby sister sitting quietly on the ground, hugging herself."(p.g. 363)
This quote was spoken by Leah. Ruth May was just bitten by the Mamba snake, but everyone wasn't aware of her injuries. The ironic thing about this quote is that, she wanted to become the thing that set her free. It was obvious that Ruth May wasn't herself ever since she was cured from Malaria, so her death was like her spirit set free. Also on page 239, Nelson says to Ruth May: "What is it? I said, but not any words came out of my mouth. I looked inside my two hands, where he put it, and there was a tiny box like what matches come in. A matchbox. The matchbox had a picture of a lion on the outside and I thought there would be a tiny little lion inside to be my pet, like the mean ones that eat the ants only nicer. Stuart Lion. But no. Nelson opened it up and took out something, I couldn't tell what. It looked like a piece of chicken bone with gristle and string all on it and sticky and comething black...He held it right up to my eye. There was a tiny hole your spirit inside here, he said here quick, blow in this hole. He opened up the peg and I blew in the little hole and quick he said my name Nommo Bandu Nommo Bandu Nommo Bandu! and shut up the hole with the little peg and Now you are safe. He said now if anything happenes to me, If I start fixing to die or something, hold on to thies tight and bambula! Ruth May will disappear!"
In class, my lit. Circle group discussed the family member from the Price family that indulged themselves in the Kongo culture the most. We chose Leah, because she showed the most signs of wanting to adapt to the culture the most. I noticed that the original quote that I'm writing about is told by Leah. Leah saying that she heard Ruth May's voice in the trees just shows how much Leah has adapted and started to believe in the Kongo's culture. This quote also shows Ruth May's free spirit, in the tree with the mamba snakes. Now she's truly happy and content, away from suffering and pain.

The Blood Diamond

The Blood Diamond is a moving film about the diamond wars that occured in Sierre Leone, Africa. The country broke out in civil war between the RUF(Revolutionary United Front) and the African government. The war started in 1991 and ended in around 2000. This civil war reminded me about the events in Poisonwood Bible. War, death, and greed all remind me of Poisonwood Bible. The circumstances are a bit different and the time periods, on which all the events have occured are also differnt but the same kind of rebellions are occuring. In the Poisonwood Bible, the Kongolese people rebel against the whites in Stanleyville; and in the Blood Diamond the people are rebelling against the government. In the movie, the RUF is a band of people who rebel against the government in a negative way. Their slogan was: "No More Slaves, No More Masters. Power and Wealth to the People." But in the movie, it shows that the RUF took lives of their own people. They mutilated them, enslaved them, raped, and pilaged towns. How could that be good for the people? It led me to wonder how could the people do this to their own?

What is beautiful?

What does it actually mean to be beautiful? Is it the physical characteristics of a person or is it their personality? How do people judge the "REAL" beauty of a person? Is there a real beauty? Or is it something that people make up in order to make everyone feel good? When i look in magazines or cataloges one word comes to mind. Superficial. The definition of superficial is: being or affecting or concerned with a surface; not deep or penetrating emotionally or intellectually. People who ARE beauty are superficial. Hidden under two tons of makeup and eating disorders are unique people who turn into superficial shells. Television shows like America's next top model focus on struggling models determination and skill to become a model. Why is modeling something to be desired? Do models need someone to tell them, "Oh! your soo beautiful! Let me take a couple poses of you with my camera!"? Or are they really narcissistic type of people?
Then there is the other type of beauty that people seem to respond better to. The "INSIDE" beauty of a person. Of course you know I don't literally mean the "insides" of a person. LOL! I mean personality. When talking with friends, I ask, "Why do you like this guy?" they respond, "He's hott, and he has a great personality." When i ask them this, the "personality" part always comes later. If it was something that people treasure more than physical characteristics than why would they say it after? I'm not saying that they are shallow people, cause I know that they are really great people. But I'm pointing out that most people don't really look @ personality first. Can a person still be considered beautiful even though they could be not as physically attractive? I know everyone would immediately respond "yes, of course". Then I'd ask, "Would you date this person?". Why wouldn't they date them? We just considered them beautiful? Although I've only seen 1/1,000,0000,000 of the worlds population I know that people who are the underdogs a.k.a not so physically attractive people, don't always find somebody to love. People claim that physical traits aren't important, but we live around people who are living contridictions to our statements.
So I ask again...What really is beauty? Is beauty a relevant idea that can change between different people? Is it a concept that is used without purpose, have we misused it's depth and meaning?
My idea of beauty is something that comes from both physical and emotional characteristics. Sure physical traits matter, but in the long run the personality of a person becomes the most important attraction. This understanding between two couples seperates us from the common animal. In the wild, animals mate to fuel the species, but for us, it becomes more than just that, we learn to form emotional bonds with eachother, which brings us closer together. What is beauty? The dictionary definition is: the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind, whether arising from sensory manifestations (as shape, color, sound, etc.), a meaningful design or pattern, or something else (as a personality in which high spiritual qualities are manifest). So I leave you here with an unanswerd question that has an answer that is relevant. People aren't bad, if they are attracted to physical characteristics more than emotional, and people aren't wierd if they are attracted to emtional characteristics more than physical. It all depends on the individual.

SAT Practice essay

SAT practice essay
I believe school’s all over the world should make their students aware of social issues. Not knowing what’s happening in our world is like driving a car with a blind fold over our eyes. As a student I think everyone should be updated on current issues of the world. The war in Iraq, the effort against homelessness, etc. is news that effects everyone in an indirect way. Also being aware of social issues creates a window of opportunity for us. Being aware of current events sometimes compels others do try and make a difference in the world. By holding/sponsoring a community service event or participating in a donation drive can make a great difference in our society. By opening our eyes to current issues, schools are broadening or future.
Even though I believe in the teaching of current issues, I can’t fully agree or accept the teaching of morals. My school supports becoming your own individual. And as an individual my morals are my own. Everyday I decide what’s right and what’s wrong, and no one should be able to tell me differently. But if classes are made where teachers tell you what morals you should have then where did everyone’s individuality go? Should there be only one right and wrong? Throughout life we find our own morals and we all learn to live by them. But morals are a subject that can’t be taught. I believe morals are a subject that can’t be taught. Morals should be found through a self journey, that everyone unconsciously goes through. In the end morals separate us from each other. It’s something that helps build a persons self being.
School is a place of learning. One attends school in order to move on through life with basic skills. Were supposed to learn how to add and subtract, how to write a decent paper, learn about different cultures, etc. Luckily some school’s like Punahou, focus on not only academics; but also social interactions studies. Classis like Psych. Ed. Guides students through counceling and moral dilemmas. The class doesn’t tell you what’s right and what’s wrong. It lets you decide for yourself. The course mainly encourages others to make their own choices. This is the course I believe should be available for all students.

MoSqUiTo CoAsT

In class were are currently watching a video called mosquito coast. This movie is about an inventor named Allie. Allie and his family currently live in the U.S. But over time Allie becomes fed up with the American Society and decides to move his family to Africa. As you know we are also reading the Poisonwood Bible. So far, the Price family is a missionary family that lives in Africa. The head of the family, Nathan Price, is a preaching Reverand that is determined on influencing the kolognese people. He believes that he needs to save the African people from their cursed lives by turning them into christians. Between the two stories, there are many parallels. The most common parallel that is the theme of both stories is: Both families lived in the U.S. before moving to Africa. Also they both moved for the same concept. To change/help the African people. In Mosquito Coast, Allie (Harisson Ford) moves his family to AFrica, because he believes that his inventions would serve more purpose to the people. Nathan Price moved his family to AFrica because he believed that the African people should be saved. Both men had similar intentions and they both were heading to the same place.

Historians corner

The history of revelations is quite interesting. The Congo has officially become an independent country. They've had their elections, and the winner is Patrice Lumumba. In documented history, the Congo was originally run by the Belgium government. Before 1960 a man named King Léopold II of Belgium ruled the Congo. His reign only lasted till 1960 a.k.a the independence of Congo. This day was: June 30,1960. On this day, the Congo also adopted a new name. The Congo was officially called The Republic of the Congo. After this joyous moment of independence, all hell broke loose! Looting and other crimes started to spread like wild fire. The Country was not in a good position. The provinces of Kasai and Katanga broke out into a full out rebellion. Mr. Lumumba panicked and turned to the USSR for help.It took the help of the U.S.,British, and Belgian governments to restore the break away provinces back to normal. This was unfortunately the beginning of a long rebellion. Up till 1965, the country had been opposed with many different problems. At that time the commander in Chief Lieutenant General Mobutu took hold of the country and declared himself president. In 1970 he held an official election, proving that he was elected with out questions. For his campaign he focused on cutural awareness. He then renamed the country: Country of Zaire.
That's all so far! I'll update with more over the vacation! seeya!

Walking through a different jungle....

Hi everyone! As you all know we are reading the Poisonwood Bible. In class we took "A Walk" around the campus. During this walk we had to envision oursleves as one of the characters in the book. My group was assigned Nathan. Nathan is the father of Rachel, Leah, ADah, and Ruth May. He also the husband of Orleanna. My interpretation of Nathan's voice goes something like this:
As I stepped out of my car I took in the humongous campus before me. At first it astounded and awed me but then it slowly ate away and intimidated me; until I was nothing but a puddle of mud. This campus reminded me of the towering rainforest back in the Congo. It frightens me, dark memories flash into my mind of the dangers and threats that we encountered there. That dark jungle of everlasting fear and sorrow. I've never spoke these words to my family. For the man of the family is supposed to be strong and fearless. They'll never know the pain I've felt, They'll never know the frustration I've passed, They'll never know the real reason i dragged them to the Congo.
I walked across the road,unto the cool white pavement. I noticed how the plants thrive for the natural sunlight of the island. I breath in the faint and lingering fragrance of the plumeria flowers. I continue walking, walking towards all of the lounging students. They remind me of the animals of the Congo. On a hot and humid day the forest animals would shelter under the plants and maybe walk to the nearest river to take a sip of water. These students remind me of them. Slowly walking, or laying on the ground, exhausted from the monotonous school work and classes.
I walk by them and focus on the purpose of my visit. I strolled onward, not stopping to pay attention to my other surroundings. I walked across a grassy field that was invaded with small children playing soccer. I remember when Rachel and Leah were young. Always running about and playing with eachother. Unfortuately god had other plans for my other daughter. Adah was a mistake. I believe God was trying to send us a message. This message was one of most challenging tests god had set upon me. It was as if he was testing my faith in him, testing my commitment to him and his teachings.
I look ahead and there it is. I finally see my destination. This place is calling out to me. Entranced by it's beauty, I walk up th steps of the chapel. I peer into the never ending depths of the green lilly pond. Colorful Koi swim by in a graceful and fluid motion. These simple fish remind me of all of gods wonderful creations. I sit on the chapel pews and ponder gods purpose for me. I remeber the days in Congo when I tried to spread the word of god to the Congolese people. My efforts were in truth unappreciated. I embraced the people with the forgivness and love that god woud have shown them, but they pushed me away. Yelling and taunting at my family. Thankfully all of that is in the past and now I can start a new in a different place.

Does the media decide whats important in our society??

In the modern society, i believe the media greatly affects the morals and ideas of the common person. Simple catchy slogans or deep headline phrases catches a persons attention and for the whole day plagues them with useless incoherent thoughts that distracts them. For example the headline from the MEN's magazine: "Sex Secrets Add to Love" To me this headline implies that sex is all a guy worries about. Now if you are a male, imagine that your walking by a normal kinda grundgy looking new stand and you spot this headline on a magazine that you haven't even't heard of. This headline would definitely catch your eye. You'd probably stop and pick it up! Seeing that this magazine has chosen this as their main headline kind of sends a message that it's one of the main articles in there. If your wondering what the definition of a headline is...Well here it is:1. a heading in a newspaper for any written material, sometimes for an illustration, to indicate subject matter, set in larger type than that of the copy and containing one or more words and lines and often several banks.
2. the largest such heading on the front page, usually at the top.
3. the line at the top of a page, containing the title."(Dictionary.com) Seeing as this is the biggest title on the front of the magazine, the company would be sure to get some people with it. I'm not saying only men think about these such things because in womans magazines they also include headlines that address the same matter. The message that I'm trying to get across is this. The media may not determine all of what's important in our lives, but the media does in turn affect us greatly. But then again you must remind yourself that the media also argues against itself! Thus making it harder for one to adapt the most important things it tries to project unto you. For example: The issues between the health media and the tobbaco media. Both sides saying and projecting totally different thoughts, but still are considered "The Media". What it comes down to is your own self decisions. Wether to be healthy, or live unhealthy is all up to you. In conclusion, I believe the media affects the ideas and morals of our society. Whether it's through Magazines, our favorite comercials, or through our favorite movie stars movies. The actions sometimes affects our opinions and lives.

My SpEcIaL pLaCe...

Sitting by the waters edge I breath in the slightly damp air of my surroundings. I love this smell. The smell that i have inhaled a thousand times before. It brings back memmories of my distant and recent future. The fragrance of the lillies hits my nose as i peer into the distance. I sit on the stone slab that serves as a bench and eat the 80 cent animal crackers that i purchase. I sit with out a care in the world. As i eat I take in the beautiful texture of the leaves and water. I watch the fish swim to and fro through the water. The ripples of the water relax me as a sit and listen. I listen to the occasional splash in the water, I listen to the many birds that fly around me. I listen to other people as they talk and play. The colors of the water relax and sooth my being. My favorite time of day to come here is 5;00. When the sun reflects off the water just right and everyone has gone home. I'm left alone. But in a sense I 'm not left alone persay. I have the water, the fish, the turtles, and the wind to keep me company.

I BELIEVE IN HULA

Taking the first steps onto the stage, I breath in the fragrance of the many different flowers that surround me. I focus and envision the dance that I'm about to perform. It replays again and again in my mind as the anticipation grows. I take a deep breath and the adrenalin spikes. huki step right, huki step left. We travel as one, breath as one, dance as one. Kaholo forward and freeze! Silence penetrates the air. The real journey begins.
My kumu onc told me that the kaholo is the most difficult motion in hula. In Hawaiian kaholo means to move. The kaholo is a step that is used in both Awanna and kahiko. It forces the dancers to sway their hips and travel at the same time. "No Problem" I exclaimed as I strode onto the dance floor. I stood with a proud figure as I waited for the chanting to begin. As soon as the chant started I panicked and suddenly lost my head! I had forgoten all that i learned and all that I knew. That was the moment when i truly understood the meaning of his words. I was lost and confused, unsure of what was to come. My name is Kristen this is my story.
In life (so far), I've encountered many obstacles that have affected me in good and bad ways. Recently bad more than good. But one of the good things that saved my broken spirit was the acceptance of a life time. On January 7, 2007 I accepted the honor of competing in the largest hula competition. The Annual Merrie Monarch Festival. This festival is the grand daddy of all hula competitions. Halau's from all over the world fly to the Big Island to compete. My mom and I have watched the Merrie Monarch every year since 1998. It's a tradition that we love sharing with eachother. Every year my mom has told me that I would soon be dancing on that very stage. Back then, I thought she was crazy, I couldn't imagine dancing in front of millions of people. But last year, as i watched my hula sisters gracefully dance, I was determined to dance at the festival.
I always use this joyous memory to keep me up during the hardest and most challenging times in my life. Experiencing the moment again and again in my mind as I plow throught the difficult moments. Keeping me happy and Inspired to pick up where i left off and continue on.
We dance into our exiting formation as my kumu chants. His voice speaks to use, almost as to say, "maikai girls". We continue dancing, but not cause we have to, but because we want to. Kaholo back, uehe right, uehe left. We finish the dance. The crowd goes wild, as we say ahuiho. As i walk off the stage everyone talks about how the dance is over and done. But for me, the dance held more meaning. I looked at it as the begining of a wonderful journey....

Everytime I Look At The Stars

I gazed in your eyes,
Such a beautiful blue;
My heart whispered to me,
And that’s right when I knew;
The waves had ceased crashing,
On the sand at our feet;
Time had stopped passing,
My search was complete;
I finally discovered,
What I'd known all along;
A mystery uncovered,
That just couldn't be wrong;
It wasn't our first kiss,
Nor' the day that we met;
But I realized something,
I will never forget;
With the stars shining brightly,
From high up above;
I'd one word to describe it,
That word, is love.
I knew then these feelings,
For my sweetheart were true;
The man of my dreams,
And my soulmate, is you.
I think of it every time,
That I look at the stars;
This memory is mine,
But that moment was
OURS.

AbOuT mE!

Hi I'm Kristen!
I'm gonna make this introduction short. LOL! What can i say.... Okay, I <3> school! My favorite colors are the colors of the Ocean. I love Phish Food icecream from Ben and Jerry's. I enjoy playing the violin with my friends and I'm currently in the Concert II orchestra @ Punahou school. During the week i don't have much time do what I want...Instead I'm training for the Merrie Monarch competition on the Big Island. I'm really excited to compete, but i know that it's gonna take a lot of practice and hard work!
Another pleasure I enjoy is Paddling. Paddling is a stress reliever and a fun event that i participate in everyday after school. I'm currently on the JV I team with my friends. So far we have a first place winning streak, and we aren't gonna give up easily. All the Punahou paddling teams are doing very well so far, and as a whole we are determined to take the ILH season!
My favorite animal is the Hawaiian Green Sea turtle. I fully suport Turtle conservation acts and I believe that people should stop eating Turtle souP! As you can see, I love every aspect of the Ocean. My favorite sports are water sports, my favorite animal is the Hawaiian Green Sea turtle, whos natural habitat is Hawaii's oceans, and my favorite colors and ice cream are also related to the ocean.
I hpoe you got to know me a little better, even though meeting me in person would be better, and i hope to get to know you as well!

4 Generations Response

4 Generations Response
After watching the 4 Generations Video blog i felt compelled to help out with the mission. The fact that a single Water Buffalo could be the greatest gift for a family in China, just shocked me. I then started to think about the children that lived there and how bad their education must be. After the movie was over, I really started to feel for the families situations and I tried to imagine the pain and heartache they must go through everyday, just to scratch a living. In a way i also feel very thankful for all that i have and what my parents have provided for me for all these years.
This video helped me realize how bad conditions really are outside of my life. It really opened my eyes to the problems that we have here, in Oahu, and in other places. In these past few months, in Chapel, we have had the pleasure of listening to esteemed speakers. One speaker, Utu Longi, spoke to us about homelessness in Oahu. He explained extreme statistics about the homeless population in Oahu. What shocked me the most was the approximate number of children that are currently living on the streets. He explained the childrens hardships and trials that they have to go through everyday. It made me really sad, to think that there are children living in such poor conditions. Seeing this video blog reminded me of his speech and my pain.
During this new year, I hope, as an english class, that we can do something to help families like the "4 generation family" and families in our own community, as much as the people in the video. I''m really interested in helping out! So guys.......Post and lets ban together to help out our community! :)

Half The World

Half the world lives,
Half the world makes,
Half the world gives
While the other half takes.

Half the world hates,
Half the world runs away,
Half the world's late,
Half the world praises the day.

Half the world is,
Half the world was,
Half the world thinks,
Half the world does.

Half the world lies,
Half the world burns,
Half the world cries
While the other half turns.

Half the world cares,
Half the world weeps,
Half the world shares,
Half the world keeps.

Half the world sings,
Half the world laughs,
Half the world brings,
Half the world tries to be the other half.

End.

response to singers solution to poverty!

My initial response to this emotional and deep essay was: "Oh my gosh!" I couldn't believe how a single essay could help me see so much of the world i"m living in. I honestly couldn't picture the idea of a man choosing an expensive car over an innocent child. I hoped that there are more people like the woman who went back for the child even though she had to reaturn the 1,000 dollars. Mr. Peter Singer wrote about these "in your face" examples to show us extreme situations that happen every day. Okay, maybe the situations aren't sooo extreme, but the same type of principal is being acted out everyday in small ways. He quotes ideas from philosopher Peter Unger concerning the neglect that we project everyday. He recalls Mr. Unger's past research attempts concerning the amount of money needed to affect a childs life. "Unger called up some experts used the information they provided to offer some plausible stimates that include the cost of raising money, administrative expenses and the cost of delivering aid where it is most needed. By his calculation, $200 in donations would help a sickly 2-year-old transform into a healthy 6-year-old--offering safe passage through childhood's most dangerous years." This reminded of me of all of the projects i participated in, at my old school. Every year instead of going trick or treating for candy, we'd trick or treat for unicef, in order to raise money for the cause. At the time I honestly didn't know what i was doing it for, and i wanted to trick or treat for candy instead, but now i know the purpose.
I also think that Mr.Singer explained and supported his ideas clearly and with many strong sources. I clearly understood his points and i realy enjoyed reading this report.
